Custom design shaped by North Idaho heritage By Like Media Team Eric Hedlund's connection to Coeur d'Alene runs deeper than his portfolio. His grandfather immigrated from Sweden, eventually serving as a state representative and as head of the appropriations committee for the State of Idaho and later helping lead the development of buildings at North Idaho College, including the one that still carries the family name. After fourteen years designing private country clubs and residences across the country, Hedlund returned to Coeur d'Alene in 2004 and served as Vice President of Design for Black Rock Development before opening eric hedlund design llc (EHD) in 2007. Nearly two decades later, the studio at 754 4th Street has shaped homes around Lake Coeur d'Alene, across North Idaho, and throughout the Western United States.
The firm's brand line is "diverse modern classic," a philosophy that shapes every project. "We are not tied to a single architectural style," Hedlund says. "Our strength is designing specifically for the client, the site, and the lifestyle they envision." His early career took him through more than forty private and public golf facilities, from Tuscan-inspired clubhouses at The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe to the rustic mountain architecture of The Stock Farm Club to native Spanish design at Querencia in Los Cabos. Commercial work, including projects like StanCraft Jet Center and The Davenport Grand, still accounts for roughly twenty percent of EHD's portfolio.
Across that range, EHD’s work is held together by proportion, detail, and restraint. The style may change from project to project, but the goal remains consistent: timeless, well-executed design.
That philosophy is most evident in the firm's lakefront work. Hedlund believes the home, the interiors, and the landscape should feel completely integrated, and he encourages clients to plan for that investment from the start. Orientation, views, sunlight, privacy, and how the client intends to live in the home all shape the design process. Every property on Lake Coeur d'Alene has its own opportunities, and the architecture is built to respond to the site rather than compete with it.
Indoor-outdoor living drives many of those conversations. EHD visits many of the residences it has designed on the lake and at private clubs, which gives the team a working understanding of how these spaces are used throughout the year. The goal is outdoor environments that extend well past summer. Covered gathering spaces, integrated heating, fireplaces, and thoughtful orientation let clients use those areas into spring and fall, when Coeur d'Alene's shoulder seasons are at their best.
EHD operates as a full-service studio: architectural design, interior design, planning, and construction management under one roof. Hedlund holds professional degrees in both Architecture and Fine Arts in Interior Architecture, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He has always believed the interior and exterior should work together from the first sketch. That integration is part of why so much of the firm's work comes from repeat clients and referrals. That same continuity extends to the team, where many members have been with EHD for eight to more than twenty-two years. That longevity creates a cohesive internal process and helps the studio deliver projects with coordinated, consistent execution from concept through construction.
Hedlund has watched the region's design preferences evolve. In the early 2000s, heavy timber homes dominated the market. Now, client preferences range widely, and he often finds himself walking them through the difference between modern and contemporary, which are not the same thing. Lately, refined rustic and Pacific Northwest eclectic mountain architecture have returned to the forefront, and the level of detail those homes require is where EHD's craftsmanship shows clearest.
The thread that holds it all together is the team. "We are a team," Hedlund says. "It takes the team to make a successful project." That belief, paired with a commitment to relationships, quality, and lasting design, continues to shape EHD’s work in Coeur d’Alene and across the Western United States.
